Diagnosis
BMW won't start or keeps stalling? What to check first
A BMW that will not start is stressful, especially after it has already been to several garages. Most of these problems have a clear cause that proper testing can find.
Start with the simple things
- Battery. Modern BMWs need a healthy battery for every module to wake up. Low voltage can cause strange warnings, no-crank or stalling.
- Battery registration. When a new battery is fitted, BMW expects it to be registered to the car. If not, the charging system can treat it wrongly and it fails early.
- Fuel level and quality. A low reading or bad fuel can cause hard starts and stalling.
Common causes we find
- Crankshaft or camshaft sensor faults: the engine cranks but will not fire, or cuts out when hot.
- Fuel pump or pressure problems: on turbo engines, the low-pressure and high-pressure pumps both matter.
- Immobiliser and key faults: the car cranks but the engine is not allowed to start.
- Vacuum or boost leaks: rough idle, stalling at junctions.
- Overheating damage: low compression or head gasket problems after a previous overheat.
- Wiring and earth problems: especially on older cars or after previous repairs.
Why parts-guessing fails
We often meet cars that have had several sensors, a fuel pump and coils replaced and still do not run. Each part was a guess. Proper diagnosis looks at fault history, live data, fuel pressure and compression together, and finds the one real cause.
